The economy is booming but the peso is sliding against the dollar. Most economists believe that the official forecasts for growth and inflation in 2006 (3.6% growth and 3% inflation) are conservative. If Mexico used US-style methodology to calculate growth, the official rate for growth in the first two months would have been 25% rather than the less alarming 5.9% rate. Even so, the rate for the first two months is the best rate for the first two months of any year since 2000. Then, in the last presidential election year, the economy grew by 6.9%.
